Hosea Early Life
Hosea Williams was born on January 5, 1926 in Attapulgus, in Decatur County. Both of Hosea parents were young, unmarried, and blind when they had him and sadly his mother died while giving birth to her second child. Also, to his mothers run away from the Macon Institute, an institution for the blind, Hosea never knew his father so he was raised by his mother's parents, Lela and Turner Williams. Almost being lynched at the age of 14 ,for his illegal involvement with a white girl, Hosea decided it was time to leave. After he left he held many low status jobs for several years until he enrolled in the U.S. army at thebeginning of WWII. He served in an all-black unit attached to General George Patton's Third Army. After beginning badly wounded during battle Hosea earned a Purple Heart and he spent a year in a military in Europe. During his return to Georgia and civilian life , Williams completed the requirements for a high school diploma at the age of twenty three. He then enrolled at Morris Brown College in Atlanta, with the help of the G.I. Bill, and graduated with a bachelor's degree in chemistry. After completing a master's degree in chemistry, from Atlanta University, Williams became a chemist for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Savannah.
